Default Opinions needed on Resin and new model

Hi All,

At Salute we had a few new models displayed and one of them was a huge bug that we wanted to use in our new alien army. However due to rising costs of metal I had decided to do a trial in resin in order to keep costs down especially regarding postage.

Do people think its a good idea for some of the bigger models to go to resin ?

The following links are of the huge beastie that I have a few casts of. The paint job isnt finished yet but I thought I would ask what people think about the model.

The model itself is not small and so I am really interested if models like this one would be worth looking into more especially since there are some nice ideas I have in mind if people are interested.

Let me know what you think...

My first thought was - where's the frieghter thats hiding in the asteroid?

Very interesting mini. Presumably it moves underground and surfaces to attack? Cool idea. I like it.

Can we get a photo of it next to something else to get a better idea of the scale?

My only problem with resin is that some other suppliers don't clean their resin minis properly and there is a lot of preperation to get them ready to paint.
I don't know the technical details of all this stuff but how hard is it to make sure the minis require minimal preperation before painting?

the new pics are a bit rushed but should suffice to show the size of this thing

The model here of the beastie is resin and hasnt been cleaned up so you can see flash here and there. As someone who buys foreworld stuff I was impressed with the quality but I suppose it depends on each model. This one came out really clearly as did the others I asked for in a limited amount.

As for what the creature reminds me of I bet there are several people here who could mention a few possibilities, like Dune, Star Wars (Empire strikes back).

Can't really see myself buying one to be honest.

I like it ... resin or metal works for me. Even if I use it as a piece of Dangerous Terrain - anything that moves within 3cms must take a DTT ! I thought about the Dune, Star Wars and even the Sandworms from "Buetlegeuse"(I know I spelled that wrong ?!)... Works for me ! I got a 10 or 15mm model from Pendraken (IIRC) that looks like the man eating plant Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors. I made it part of my 'Nid/Bug terrain ... So I'm easy !

I have no problem with resin in 6mm. Especially if it lowers your cost, Doug, and keeps the line afloat.

I'm not too partial to that sculpt, however, and already have a suitable alternative:

So resin in general? Sure, but I'll pass on that guy.

Thanks for the comments...

as I say it would probably count for the bigger and obviously heavier models depending on what we want to do.

The other stuff would stay as metal

Some specific critiques on the mini:

The upper head is good, I like the eyes.

The teeth look overlarge, and unfinished.

The articulation of the mouth is odd, like a sock-puppet.

The lower jaw looks like it belongs on another mini, or is out of scale.

It also reminds me of this: http://armorcast.com/store/images/624_lg.jpg

I find working with resin easier than metal for the most part, so buying bigger models in resin would be fine for me, particularly if it saves everyone $.

Got to say that specific model looks too silly for mine....I wouldn't be buying one of them.

I've no problem with resin in general either, I think it's a good idea though I'm not sure how cost effective it will work out with relatively limited runs, however that's your job!
Like others here I'm not convinced by this particular guy either, not quite sure why yet.
